Quantifying Surface Chemistry with Single-Particle Plasmonic Sensing

Academic Research Opportunity

A scientific internship using single-particle plasmonic sensing to quantify surface chemistry. Plasmonic nanoparticles are highly sensitive to their local environment; small changes within a few nanometers of the particle surface lead to measurable shifts in their optical response, making them promising nanoscale sensors. The intern will use a single-particle dark-field scattering setup to measure the optical spectra of individual gold nanoparticles, correlate these with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to determine particle shape, and systematically modify the surface chemistry by varying and exchanging surface molecules to quantify how sensitively plasmonic nanoparticles probe their nanoscale environment.

Criteria: Eligibility: You are currently enrolled in a Master's program in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field. You have a nationality of an EU-member state and/or you are a student at a university in the Netherlands. The internship has to be a mandatory part of your curriculum. We expect you to be available for at least 5 months, although longer is preferable. Prerequisites: none stated beyond the eligibility criteria (current enrollment in a Master's program in physics, chemistry, materials science or a related field; EU nationality and/or enrollment at a Dutch university; internship mandatory part of curriculum; availability of at least 5 months) Selection process: You can respond to the vacancy online via the application button under the vacancy text; an email confirms receipt of the application. If invited for an interview, AMOLF organises a day programme: you speak with different scientists, give a presentation about your recent work or final dissertation and receive a guided tour of the laboratories (travel and accommodation costs are reimbursed). Within several days of your visit you hear whether you have been offered the position.
