Probabilistic Computing in Nonlinear Optical Resonators

Academic Research Opportunity

A scientific internship exploring how nonlinear optical resonators can be used for probabilistic computing. Building on a theoretical realization of a new way to make a probabilistic bit (p-bit) in a nonlinear optical cavity, the project investigates how to implement this optical p-bit experimentally and what determines its energy efficiency, speed, and precision, and how these performance metrics inter-relate. The project involves experiments and computer simulations of stochastic nonlinear dynamical systems.

Criteria: Currently enrolled in a Master's program in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field; nationality of an EU-member state and/or a student at a university in the Netherlands; the internship must be a mandatory part of the curriculum; availability for at least 5 months (longer preferable).
