Hacking Hidden Cultures: Interdisciplinary Research for Responsible Work in Technology and Society

Academic Research Opportunity

An interdisciplinary student research project on responsible work cultures in technology and society. In this interdisciplinary research seminar, students work together with the instructor and other students as equal co-researchers on a real ongoing project about how hidden rules, norms and routines in different study programmes shape learning, cooperation and ideas of 'good' science. In mixed teams (e.g. engineering, computer science, philosophy, sociology, design, economics, psychology), participants collaboratively design and carry out a study using methods such as ethnographic observation, short interviews, document and teaching material analysis or reflection journals, co-develop research questions, methods and small interventions that strengthen competences for responsible work in technology and society, and can follow the full research cycle up to a joint publication.

Criteria: Eligibility: The course is open to Bachelor and Master students from all fields; international and exchange students are particularly welcome, as diverse perspectives enrich the research. No prior knowledge in any discipline or method is required – curiosity, willingness to reflect and to work across disciplines is enough. (X-Student Research Groups are primarily intended for students of the four BUA partner institutions: FU Berlin, HU Berlin, TU Berlin, Charité; participation is possible from all subjects and for both BA and MA students.) Prerequisites: None required: 'No prior knowledge in any discipline or method is required – curiosity, willingness to reflect and to work across disciplines is enough.' Course language is English. Selection process: Registration is done by attending the first session of the course (per the course catalogue, 17 April 2026) and notifying the instructor immediately following the session of your binding interest in attending. If there are more than 15 interested students, seats are drawn by lot (the random procedure is carried out by the StuROPx coordination office). The lecturer informs you whether you have received a place. If offered a place, check whether enrollment as a BUA student is required (Step 2) and have the 6 credit points credited (Step 3). No application documents are required.
