The Berlin University Alliance X-Tutorials program serves as a central pillar of the Student Research Opportunities Program (StuROPx), designed to foster a culture of independent, collaborative research among students in Berlin. This unique initiative supports student-led research projects that are both initiated and conducted by students, providing them with the academic freedom to explore specialized research questions early in their studies. The program is open to students from the alliance's four partner institutions: Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. By bringing together participants from various disciplines and universities, X-Tutorials encourage interdisciplinary exchange and the cross-pollination of academic methodologies. In these tutorials, two student project leaders work as a team to guide a small group of up to fifteen fellow students through a research project spanning two consecutive semesters. To support this work, the Berlin University Alliance provides selected project leaders with a monthly research scholarship of five hundred and fifty euros for the duration of the project. This funding represents one of the first research scholarships of its kind for students in the German-speaking region. Participating students who join these projects can earn six credit points, which are typically recognized within the elective or compulsory elective modules of their degree programs. The tutorials conclude with the presentation of research findings at the annual Berlin Conference for Student Research, offering a platform for early-career researchers to share their work with the broader academic community. This hands-on approach empowers students to develop research designs, collect data, and contribute actively to the academic discourse in their chosen fields while working in an intensive, peer-to-peer environment.
