LDEO Summer Internship Program for Undergraduates

Research Internship

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) offers two distinct summer internship opportunities designed for undergraduate students interested in Earth and ocean sciences. The Lamont Summer Intern Program is open to undergraduates from U.S. colleges and universities, providing a hands-on research experience under the guidance of a Columbia-affiliated scientist. Concurrently, the Earth Intern Program specifically caters to Columbia and Barnard undergraduates, offering a similar immersive research experience with an LDEO-affiliated scientist. Both programs feature participation in special lectures, workshops, and fieldtrips to enrich the scientific learning experience. Interns receive a ten-week stipend of $6000 and free housing in an air-conditioned Columbia University dormitory, facilitating their focus on research within a supportive academic environment.

Criteria: For the NSF REU-SITE part of the program, applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. Students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents can apply but are limited to non-REU-Site projects. Applicants must have an interest in conducting research in Earth, Ocean, Atmospheric, and Environmental Sciences. Desirable coursework includes two college-level courses in eligible major areas (earth science, environmental science, chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, or engineering), and at least one year of calculus or good grades in college-level mathematics. Specific research areas have additional course requirements: two semesters of college-level chemistry for Geochemistry and Chemical Oceanography; two semesters of college-level biology for Marine Biology; two semesters of college-level physics for Geophysics. Exceptions may be made if appropriate courses are not offered at the applicant's college.
