The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at NYU Grossman School of Medicine's Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences offers qualified college students who have completed their sophomore or junior year the opportunity to conduct hands-on biomedical research. Participants engage in research under the direction of a faculty mentor in a preferred area of biomedical sciences. The program also includes weekly "Conversations with a Scientist/Physician" lunch sessions, journal clubs, and seminars, followed by dinner. Optional social activities such as movie nights and museum tours are also available. At the culmination of the program, students present their research at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium (LANS) and give a poster presentation to the NYU Langone research community. Accepted students receive a $5,000 payment, free housing, and reimbursement for round-trip travel expenses. Full-time commitment to the program for its duration is expected. Research disciplines include biomedical imaging and technology, biostatistics, cell biology, computational biomedicine, developmental genetics, epidemiology, immunology and inflammation, microbiology, molecular biophysics, molecular oncology and tumor immunology, molecular pharmacology, neuroscience and physiology, population health, and stem cell biology.
