The NYC Epi Scholars program is a full-time, paid 10-12 week summer internship program for top graduate epidemiology students at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Scholars receive supplemental training from senior researchers, which includes instruction in theory, methods, and public health practice, designed to enhance their understanding of the root causes of disease. All scholars are provided with the opportunity to present their findings to senior epidemiologists, key stakeholders, and their peers. For many scholars, this research internship fulfills thesis requirements and often serves as an opportunity to develop a publishable paper or report. Participants in the Epi Scholars Program receive an allowance to cover expenses for the full-time, 10-12 week summer internship. They benefit from mentorship by some of the nation’s leading epidemiologists and researchers, along with enhanced academic opportunities and seminars focusing on methods, theory, and public health practice. The program offers practical experience in statistical analysis using software such as SAS®, SPSS®, STATA®, or SUDAAN®. Scholars also have opportunities to present their project findings, interact and collaborate with other Epi Scholars and senior public health professionals from across the country, and potentially work on publishable reports while receiving thesis support.
