The Visiting Research Fellowships at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICwS) are designed for distinguished scholars whose work aligns with the Institute's primary areas of focus. These areas include strengthening the rule of law; promoting minority and indigenous rights; re-conceptualising Law, Rights and Development; combatting climate breakdown and supporting environmental justice; advocating for the right to a nationality; and defending global multilateralism. Fellows are expected to actively participate in the Institute's activities, which involves attending and organizing seminars and conferences, presenting occasional papers, and being available for consultation by students. Visiting Fellows gain access to Institute facilities, including Senate House Libraries, institutional email, and hot-desking office space. They are also encouraged to list their details in the SAS-Directory of Research and Expertise and utilize the SAS-Space online repository. A bench fee of £2,600 per year, applied pro rata, is typically required, though applicants can explain compelling reasons for an exemption in their application. Fellowships are available for a duration of 3 months to 1 year and are unfunded. The Institute does not provide accommodation; successful candidates must arrange their own. Applicants should be engaged in or have recently completed research relevant to Commonwealth issues, demonstrate an academic or policy-related track record appropriate for mid-career or senior-level research, provide a focused research plan, and be able to contribute to the ICwS research environment. Applications are accepted annually by January 31st and should include a completed VRF application form, an up-to-date CV, two references, and a short statement outlining the proposed research and/or expected publications.
