The Miller Fellowships in Exile Studies, sponsored by the Martin Miller and Hannah Norbert-Miller Trust, offer funding to researchers focusing on German-speaking exile in the UK. The fellowships support scholars who wish to conduct research at the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies (ILCS) within its Germanic Studies Library and Archives. This collection includes significant papers related to individuals exiled from Germany and Austria during the 1930s due to persecution under the National Socialist regime. The program is open to applicants from both the UK and overseas who have completed their doctorate and possess a strong record of publications. Fellowships are designed to provide a contribution towards temporary living expenses in London, or to enable individuals in employment to take leave for furthering their studies, with awards typically granted for periods of one to three months. Fellows are offered shared office accommodation with full access to library resources, including the Institute's Germanic Studies Library and archives, Senate House Library, and other School of Advanced Study institute libraries. Participants are expected to actively engage with the intellectual community of the Institute, including giving a presentation at one of the Research Centre for German & Austrian Exile Studies' seminars. Additionally, Visiting Fellows are invited to organize an event or contribute to the Institute's activities, such as placing a recent, unpublished piece of work in the open-access SAS-Space repository or contributing to the ILCS blog. Publications resulting from research during the fellowship must acknowledge the Institute and its Research Centre for German & Austrian Exile Studies.
