Visiting Research Scholars Program

The Visiting Research Scholar (VRS) program at The Graduate Center, CUNY, facilitates research opportunities for external scholars who wish to engage with the university's academic discourse. This program is structured into two main processes. The initial phase, managed by the Office of the Provost, focuses on evaluating a potential scholar's ability to contribute meaningfully to the academic community and ensuring all necessary documentation and visit details are in order. Prospective scholars are nominated by a faculty member, with formal requests submitted by an Executive Officer of a program or a Director of a center at least three months prior to the proposed start date. Each approved scholar is required to have a faculty advisor who will supervise their research or engage in collaborative work. It is important to note that visitors are not eligible to serve as Principal Investigators on Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) applications. The second phase, managed by the Office of Human Resources, addresses immigration requirements for non-citizen visitors, assisting those eligible for the Exchange Visitor Program (J-1 visa) facilitated by the Department of State. Scholars who do not intend to participate in the Exchange Visitor Program are not eligible for visa assistance from The Graduate Center. Both American citizens and those with dual citizenship are eligible to be Visiting Research Scholars, though all scholars are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. Upon approval, the nominating Executive Officer or Director receives an official letter from the Provost authorizing the visit and granting customary privileges, such as a computer account. The application requires a formal request from the nominating program/center, the candidate's CV, and a statement of research intent detailing their goals and the necessity of the GC position for their agenda. For non-US citizens, additional J-1 visa and foreign influence due diligence forms are also required.
