The Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) is a comprehensive, fully funded summer internship designed for undergraduate students committed to pursuing graduate study toward a PhD or MD-PhD. The program provides closely mentored research experiences in the life and physical sciences, social and behavioral sciences, and the humanities across 20 research institutions nationwide. Participants engage in 8–10 weeks of intensive research under the guidance of a faculty or research mentor, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation. The SR-EIP covers a stipend, along with travel and housing expenses, and requires participants to make oral or poster presentations at The Leadership Alliance National Symposium. Beyond the research, the program offers professional development mentoring on applying to graduate programs and provides access to ongoing resources, mentoring, and professional networks within The Leadership Alliance community to support participants' long-term career paths. Eligibility typically requires applicants to be documented U.S. citizens or permanent residents, full-time students in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or better, and to have completed at least two semesters of undergraduate education. The program specifically aims to foster diversity by preparing young scholars from underrepresented and underserved populations for graduate training. It is not intended for students seeking professional training in fields such as law, business administration, clinical medicine, or allied health professions.
